Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

The spell to defeat death is the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. The Tryambakam Mantra is another name for it. Lord Shiva is the recipient of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. The “three-eyed one,” or Shiva, is connected to the mantra. Rishi Markanda discovered the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. This mantra was exclusively known to him and no other person on the planet. In Hinduism, the Gayatri Mantra and the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra are equally important. Only Markandey was aware of this private mantra. According to mythology, King Daksha once cursed the moon, causing it to have problems. Then Markandey gave Sati, the Daksha daughter, the Mrityunjaya Mantra for the Moon. This is how the general populace became aware of the mantra.

As stated in the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra:

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra in Devanagari

त्र्यम्बकम् यजामहे सुगन्धिम् पुष्टिवर्धनम्
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माम्रतात् ।।

In English, the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

Om Tryambakam Yajmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi-Vardhanam
Urvārukam Iva Bandhanān Mṛtyormukṣīya Māmṛtāt

In certain Hindu religious texts, the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is mentioned along with the Beej Mantra:

“OM Hrom Om Joom Sah Bhurbhuvah Swh Om Tryambakam Yajmahe Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam Urvā Rukamiva Bandhanān Mrityormukshīya Māmritāt Bhurbhuvah Swarom Joom Sah Hrom Om”

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra’s phrases mean:

Om, a sacred syllable
Tryambakam, three-eyed oYa
image: We revere and honor
Sugandhim, fragrant
Pushti is prosperous and full of life
Vardhanam: one who nourishes and strengthens
Urvā rukamiva: big and powerful
Bandhanān, from captivity
Mrityormukshya: to liberate from death
Mā- me
Mritāt- [with] immortality

Mahamrityunjay Mantra-related narrative

The legend of Markandey

Markandu was a wise man in the past. He and his wife performed strict penance to appease Lord Shiva. Shiva appeared to them when he was delighted and gave them the choice of having a horrible son who would live for 100 years or a heavenly and good son who would only live for 16 years. Now, which son do you want to have?

Sage Markandu and his wife decided on a good son, although a transient one. They were given a divine son by Shiva, whom they named Markandey. When Markandey was just eight years old, he already knew all the sacred texts and everything else that was necessary for self-actualization. It was his father who taught him this. He was not aware that he has a short lifespan and will only live for 16 years, though. His parents urged him to routinely worship Lord Shiva but never told him this.

Yama, the god of death, manifested and stood in front of him on the final day of his sixteenth year of existence. He caught Markandey in his snare when he was sitting and praising Lord Shiva. Markandey’s breathing became unsteady as Yama began to expel the soul or life from his body. Markandey embraced the sacred shilling (a celestial representation of Lord Shiva) with deep devotion when he suddenly recognized the powerful mantra known as the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.

Shiva arrived at Markandey through the sacred Shiva Linga and chased Yama away when he began reciting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. The God of Death then turned around, and Shiva gave Markandey the blessing that he would rule the Himalayas forever.

The Maha Mrityunjay Mantra is Chanted for What Purposes?

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is one of the two significant mantras described in the Vedas, together with the Gayatri Mantra. It is repeated to prevent untimely death and promote mental calmness and tranquility in people. The mantra has incredible healing potential to solve medical issues that not even physicians can solve.

When chanting the mantra, one should face either east or north. Rotate the beads of a Rudraksha rosary with your thumb and ring finger. Maintain a copper container with water in it in front. 108 times should be added to the mantra. Drink the water after you have finished repeating the mantra the aforementioned number of times. Given that Monday is Lord Shiva’s day, starting this practice on Monday is quite advantageous. While chanting the mantra, you should also sprinkle some water throughout your home to ward off evil spirits. Eliminating the bad energy surrounding you will bring you a great deal of serenity and quiet.

When chanted with a pure heart and devotion, the mantra is said to release good vibrations and surround its chanter with a holy shield. You are protected from all diseases and harmful forces thanks to this.
