What Is Panchang?
The word ‘Panchang’ traditionally refers to five main components used in Vedic astrology and Hindu calendrical calculations.
These five elements are
- Tithi
- Vara
- Nakshatra
- Yoga
- Karana
Together, these factors are used to understand the astrological quality of a day and to calculate many traditional timings.
What Is Tithi?
Tithi is the lunar day.
It is calculated from the angular relationship between the Sun and the Moon.
A lunar month contains 30 Tithis, divided into two halves:
- Shukla Paksha, the waxing phase
- Krishna Paksha, the waning phase
Different Tithis are traditionally associated with different kinds of activities, rituals and observances.
What Is Vara?
Vara refers to the weekday.
Each weekday is traditionally associated with a planetary ruler:
- Sunday – Sun
- Monday – Moon
- Tuesday – Mars
- Wednesday – Mercury
- Thursday – Jupiter
- Friday – Venus
- Saturday – Saturn
The weekday is often considered together with the other Panchang factors rather than separately.
What Is Nakshatra?
Nakshatra refers to the lunar mansion occupied by the Moon.
Vedic astrology traditionally uses 27 Nakshatras.
Nakshatra is important in many areas of astrology, including Muhurta, naming traditions, compatibility and birth chart interpretation.
The Moon usually stays in one Nakshatra for about one day, though the exact timing varies.
What Is Yoga?
Yoga in Panchang is calculated from the combined positions of the Sun and the Moon.
There are traditionally 27 yogas.
Each yoga is given a particular interpretation and may be considered when selecting time for important activities.
What Is Karana?
Karana represents half of a Tithi.
There are 11 traditional Karanas, some of which repeat during the lunar month.
Karana is commonly used as one of the five basic elements of Panchang and may be considered in Muhurta calculations.
Sunrise and Sunset in Panchang
Sunrise is very important in traditional Panchang calculations because many daily timings are calculated with reference to local sunrise and sunset.
The exact sunrise and sunset times depend on location.
This is why the same date may show slightly different Panchang timings in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati or another city.
Moonrise and Moonset
Moonrise and moonset times can also be relevant for certain fasts, rituals and lunar observances.
These timings are location-specific and may differ from one city to another.
Why Location Matters in Daily Panchang
Panchang is not based only on the date.
Geographical location affects sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset and several calculated time periods.
For this reason, always enter the correct city or location when using a Daily Panchang calculator.
What Is Rahu Kalam?
Rahu Kalam is a traditional period of the day that is generally avoided for beginning certain important activities.
Its duration and timing vary according to the weekday and local sunrise and sunset.
Rahu Kalam should not be judged as an independent prediction of bad events. It is simply one traditional Muhurta consideration.
What Is Yamaganda?
Yamaganda is another traditional daily time period considered less favourable for beginning certain activities.
Like Rahu Kalam, its timing varies according to the weekday and local sunrise.
It is usually considered together with other Panchang factors.
What Is Gulika Kalam?
Gulika Kalam is a traditional period associated with Saturn.
Its interpretation varies between traditions.
For important Muhurta decisions, it is better to consider Gulika together with Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and other relevant factors.
What Is Abhijit Muhurta?
Abhijit Muhurta is traditionally considered an auspicious period around midday on many days.
Its exact timing depends on local sunrise and sunset.
However, it may not be used in the same way for every activity, and traditional rules can vary.
Is Panchang Enough to Select an Auspicious Time?
Not always.
Daily Panchang is a useful starting point, but selecting a detailed Muhurta may require consideration of:
- Tithi
- Nakshatra
- Vara
- Yoga
- Karana
- Lagna
- Planetary positions
- Rahu Kalam
- Individual birth charts
- Nature of the activity
A good Muhurta should be considered in context rather than from one factor alone.
Panchang and Personal Horoscope
Daily Panchang describes the astrological conditions of a particular day and location.
A personal horoscope, on the other hand, describes the individual birth chart of a person.
The same Panchang may apply to everyone in a location, but its effect may be interpreted differently depending on the person’s own horoscope.
