Why Believe in Astrology ?

The answer to the question lies very much in the same realm as why people believe in just about any superstition. Astrology promises several things that many people find very desirable: information and assurance about the future, a way to escape responsibility for their current situation and future decisions, and a sense of connection to the entire cosmos.

Many other beliefs categorized as “New Age” share this trait with astrology. For example, the idea that nothing in life is truly coincidental. In this view of life, everything that happens to us, even the smallest or seemingly most insignificant event, happens for some particular reason. Astrology then claims to provide at least some of the answers as to why they happen. And perhaps even a way to predict them in advance. In this way, astrology purports to help people understand their lives and the world around them, and who doesn’t want that?

There are a few reasons why people find astrology appealing:

  • Pattern recognition: The inherent human desire to find patterns has led to the millennia-long observation of the stars’ movements. Astrology offers a way to explain human experiences through these celestial patterns.
  • Sense of control: Life can feel unpredictable, and astrology can provide a comforting sense of order and understanding. The belief, however illusory, that our fates are linked to the stars empowers us.
  • Comfort and meaning: Astrology can offer a sense of purpose and belonging. It can help people feel connected to something larger than themselves, especially during difficult times.
  • Barnum effect: Astrologers craft horoscopes with vague wording and broad personality traits that can apply to almost anyone. This, combined with our tendency to focus on information that confirms our existing beliefs. It can make us feel like our horoscopes are eerily accurate.
