When I try to understand Bhuvaneshwari Mahavidya, one idea repeatedly comes before me—the profound idea of space.
We normally think of space as an empty area around us. In fact, in the spiritual understanding of Bhuvaneshwari, space is never simply emptiness. It is the vast field within which existence appears, grows, changes, and finally dissolves.
Therefore, during my more than 34 years of involvement with spiritualism and traditional practices, I have felt that understanding Bhuvaneshwari becomes much easier when we first understand the deeper meaning of Akasha, or cosmic space.

আমরা সাধারণভাবে আকাশ বলতে মাথার উপরের নীল আকাশ বুঝি। কিন্তু আধ্যাত্মিক অর্থে আকাশ অনেক গভীর একটি ধারণা। যেখানে সৃষ্টি প্রকাশিত হতে পারে, সেই অসীম ক্ষেত্রের কথাই এখানে বলা হচ্ছে।
1. What Does “Akasha” Really Mean?
In Indian philosophical traditions, classical texts commonly translate Akasha as ether or space. Furthermore, it stands as the subtlest of the five great elements—the Pancha Mahabhuta:
- Akasha: Space or Ether
- Vayu: Air
- Agni: Fire
- Jala: Water
- Prithvi: Earth
Space provides the fundamental possibility for everything else to exist. For instance, a house cannot exist without physical space. The planets cannot move without celestial space. Even our physical body contains countless spaces—from the smallest cavities to the spaces between living cells.
In the same way, the universe itself requires an immeasurable field in which creation can manifest.

- Bhuvana: World, cosmic realm, or manifest universe.
- Ishwari: The supreme feminine sovereign or divine ruler.
Therefore, Bhuvaneshwari represents the Divine Mother whose presence encompasses the worlds.
Her association with space expresses something truly profound: the Divine Mother is not merely somewhere inside creation. Instead, creation itself exists within Her limitless presence.

এই ভাবনাটিই আমার কাছে Bhuvaneshwari-র অন্যতম সুন্দর দিক। আমরা সাধারণত ভাবি দেবী এই পৃথিবীর কোথাও অবস্থান করছেন। কিন্তু Bhuvaneshwari-র ক্ষেত্রে ভাবনাটি উল্টো—সমস্ত জগৎই যেন তাঁর অসীম বিস্তারের মধ্যে অবস্থান করছে।
3. Space Is Not Lifeless Emptiness
When we see an empty room, we often say, “There is nothing here.”
However, from a spiritual perspective, that empty space is precisely what allows everything else to enter the room. Without space, there can be no movement, no growth, and no manifestation.
Consequently, this gives us a practical way to understand Bhuvaneshwari. Her cosmic space is not a lifeless vacuum; rather, it represents limitless possibility, openness, and the dynamic field of manifestation.

This is why we directly connect Bhuvaneshwari’s symbolism with the very possibility of creation. She represents the vast cosmic field within which names, forms, living beings, planets, and galaxies can manifest.
Thus, she is closely associated not merely with physical space, but with the primordial principle that allows manifestation itself.

There is another dimension of this symbolism that I find particularly meaningful in daily life.
We live in an outer world, but we also carry an enormous inner landscape within ourselves:
- Thoughts continuously arise within us.
- Memories appear and quietly disappear.
- Emotions come and go in waves.
- Desires ignite, evolve, and change.
Yet, underlying awareness remains capable of observing all these movements without being destroyed by them. Bhuvaneshwari’s symbolism encourages us to discover this greater inner spaciousness rather than becoming trapped by every passing thought or emotion.

6. Why Her Vastness Is Essential in Spiritual Practice
Human beings often suffer deeply because the mind becomes painfully narrow.
For example, a single problem may appear to occupy our entire life. A disagreement may seem overwhelming, and a temporary failure may feel permanent.
The symbolism of Bhuvaneshwari reminds me to mentally step into a larger space. When our perspective expands, the problem may still remain, but our relationship with that problem changes completely.

Her vastness serves as a spiritual image of acceptance without restriction. However, this does not mean approving of harmful actions; rather, it means developing enough inner capacity to see reality clearly before reacting to it.

Spiritual understanding gradually widens that tight circle. As a result, we begin to see ourselves as part of a much larger cosmic existence. In this sense, meditating upon Bhuvaneshwari guides the human mind from limitation toward vastness.

Your personal worries may still exist, but for a few moments, the enormous horizon changes your entire sense of scale. Similarly, looking up at a starry night sky creates that exact same feeling of quiet awe.
Bhuvaneshwari’s cosmic symbolism works in the identical manner. She reminds us that our individual life exists within something immeasurably greater.

My Personal Understanding of Bhuvaneshwari and Cosmic Space
After more than 34 years of studying spiritual traditions, I do not see Bhuvaneshwari merely as a deity associated with one particular ritual tradition.
To me, Her symbolism carries a universal spiritual message. She represents vastness without boundary, space without restriction, and the infinite field within which creation unfolds:
- When life becomes mentally crowded, Her symbolism reminds me of space.
- When external circumstances appear overwhelming, it reminds me of perspective.
- When human ego makes us feel that our individual world is everything, Bhuvaneshwari reminds us how vast existence actually is.

আমার কাছে Bhuvaneshwari-র শিক্ষা এক কথায়—নিজেকে ছোট গণ্ডির মধ্যে আটকে রাখবেন না। জীবনকে একটু বড় করে দেখুন। নিজের সমস্যাকে সময়ের বৃহত্তর পরিসরে দেখুন। নিজের অস্তিত্বকে এই বিশাল সৃষ্টির অংশ হিসেবে দেখুন। তখন হয়তো সমস্যার অস্তিত্ব থাকবে, কিন্তু সমস্যাটি আর আপনার সমস্ত আকাশ দখল করে রাখতে পারবে না।

Final Reflection
For me, Bhuvaneshwari remains an eternal reminder that the sky is always vastly greater than the clouds passing through it.
In the same way, our consciousness can become greater than the temporary fears, worries, and difficulties moving through our everyday lives. That is one of the deepest truths I personally find in the sacred relationship between Bhuvaneshwari, Akasha, and the infinite universe.
